Well, we did it! We got S.'s haircut! Gone—for now—are the days of long ponytails. Also gone—for now—are the days of Cousin It! Her little cut wasn't exactly what I wanted, but is a haircut ever exactly how you pictured it turning out? She did a great job though. She sat really still and didn't even try to put her fingers in her mouth. It only took the stylist five minutes and she was done! At first I was a little sad that it was cut, but getting her out of bed this morning and actually seeing her beautiful eyes made it all worth it.
Here is the humorous/horrifying part. (First, I need to state a fact: I don't carry cash. Out of the 365 days in the year, I may have cash on me a total of 10-15 days. My mode of operation is to always deposit it in our checking account because I like knowing how much spending money we have and having it all in one place is the easiest way to know. The second—and equally important—reason is that when I have cash I will quickly spend it . $1 here, $3 there ... and soon I have spent oodles of money!) Ok, so on with the story. This was our first time at this salon. After the haircut, I walk to the register to pay and there is a small sign taped to the side that reads similarly to, "Our stylists cannot accept gratuity on credit/debit cards." Oh no. I instantly knew that I didn't have any cash and I had unloaded my purse into the diaper bag for this trip but did not transfer the checkbook. So after many apologies where I felt like the worst customer in the world, I offered up the one thing of value that I had from my purse: a free Redbox movie rental coupon. I felt so ridiculous, but I assumed that he watched movies and it was better than nothing, right? I don't think we will ever revisit this salon of shame!
So what now? Well, my next chat with my sister-in-law (the stylist) will be about the proper protocol for this type of situation. Hopefully I will never be in that position again, but it may happen unexpectedly because I don't plan on changing my zero-cash habits. Next time I go into a salon or similar establishment, I will have to look for "the sign" BEFORE getting any service. Either that or carry a wallet full of Redbox coupons!
